GRESHAM, Ore. -- Roxanne Eastwood (So., Riverside, Calif.) scored four goals and grabbed a steal to lead the No. 2 ranked California Polytechnic State University Mustangs to an 11-5 victory over No. 5 University of Arizona to advance to the National Collegiate Club Championship game.
Cal Poly will meet No. 7 ranked and host the University of Oregon at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, while Arizona will clash with No. 1 ranked the University of California-Davis at 11:30 a.m. in the third place game.
The title marks the second for Cal Poly is as many years as the Mustangs fell to Fresno State University last year. In addition, the Mustangs will be looking to claim their fourth NCCC title as the progam captured the 2003, 2004 and 2005 crowns and finished second in 2002.
The Mustangs put the game away in the first period as Cal Poly rattled off five goals in six minutes, including a hat-trick by Eastwood, to go in front 5-0 after only seven minutes of play.
Arizona was unable to recover from the scoring streak and the Mustangs' defense as Cal Poly held the Wildcats at bay for the remainder of the contest.
The Wildcats attempted to rally back to open the second period as Justine Hedlund (Jr., Portola Valley, Calif.) and Cami Kliner (Gr., Los Angeles, Calif.) scored at the 6:05 and 5:20 marks, respectively, but the Mustangs closed the first half with a flourish as Greta Carroll (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif.) scored at 4:24, Sarah Ur (Fr., Lompoc, Calif.) buried an exclusion chance at 1:18 and Erika Bigbie (Fr., Esconido, Calif.) tacked on a score with 23 seconds remaining for a 8-2 lead at the break.
Arizona pulled to within five goals with 4:39 left in the third period as Shelly Gogol (Sr., Burlingame, Calif.) scored to put the Wildcats within 8-3 and shaved the margin back to four with 6:47 left in the fourth period as Kliner finished on an exclusion to set the score at 8-4.
Cal Poly iced the win with back-to-back goals midway through the fourth period as Kelly Gause (Fr., San Jose, Calif.) scored at 5:11 and Eastwood converted on an exclusion chance with 2:59 left on the game clock to go in front 10-4 and coast to the 11-5 victory.
In goal, the Mustangs' Jenny Austin (Sr., Burbank, Calif.) and Hayley Chilton (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) combined for 14 saves, while Rachel Nau (Sr., Danville, Calif.) notched four saves for Arizona.
