No. 1 UC-Davis Escapes #5 Arizona 6-5 in Third Place Game at 2008 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship

GRESHAM, Ore. -- Meredith Muecke (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) scored twice, including the game-winner with 2:56 left in the fourth period, and Player of the Game Elyssa Thome (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) made eight saves as No. 1-nationally ranked the University of California-Davis came back from a 4-3 halftime deficit to knock off No. 5 the University of Arizona 6-5 in the third place game at the 2008 National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Oregon at Mt. Hood Community College.

Trailing by one at halftime, the Aggies tied the score with 5:27 left in the third period as Debra Mazawa (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif.) slipped through the Wildcats' defense and deposited a shot. Arizona regained the lead at the 4:10 mark on a marker by Jennifer Shah (Jr., Yuma, Ariz.), but UC-Davis came right back with an exclusion goal by Kristin Emde (Sr., Fresno, Calif.) at the 1:07 mark to knot the game at 5-5.

Neither team could crack the other's goalie in the fourth period as Thome blocked down three shots in the period and Nau stopped two before Muecke broke down the left side and ripped a shot into the back of the cage for the game-winner.

The game was a nip-tuck affair from the opening sprint as UC-Davis went in front on an exclusion goal by Muecke with 2:35 left in the first period. Arizona evened the score at the 1:54 mark with a score by Cami Kliner (Gr., Los Angeles, Calif.), but Davis went back in front before the end of the period with a tally by Nicole Lagasse (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) with 42 seconds remaining.

Arizona erased the margin and put Davis in a two-goal hole in the second period as Shelly Gogol (Sr., Burlingame, Calif.) and Shan scored on exclusion chances at 6:10 and 1:43, and Kliner tacked on an even-strength tally at 4:55 to hold a 4-2 lead.

Davis chipped into the margin before the break as Annie Benisch (So., Modesto, Calif.) scored her first goal of the tournament with 42 seconds left in the first half as the Aggies entered halftime down by one.

For Arizona, Kliner finished with two goals and Nau made three saves as the Wildcats finish fourth in the tournament. The finish marks the second-time this academic year Head Coach Emily Schmitt has guided an Arizona team to a Top Five finish at a National Collegiate ClubChampionship as she led the men to fourth place in the fall.
