BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- George Washington University's Chris Whittam (Sr., Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep) and Princeton University's Zach Beckmann (Sr., Palos Verdes, CA/Palos Verdes) have been named the September 11 Collegiate Water Polo Association Varsity Southern Division Co-Players of the Week for their performance during the period of September 3-10.
Whittam posted 31 saves, including a pair of penalty blocks, nine steals and four assists to help the GW men's water polo team to a perfect 4-0 record at the Princeton Invitational last weekend. The senior goalkeeper began the weekend with seven saves, including a penalty block, and five steals as the Colonials upset 17th-ranked Santa Clara, 9-8, in overtime. Whittam also had a penalty block, 11 saves and two assists in GW's 10-4 victory over Fordham. The Colonials are now 5-2 on the season and have knocked off a ranked Santa Clara team in each of the last two seasons.
Beckmann scored 15 goals in Princeton's five wins in the season-opening Princeton Invitational. Beckmann was responsible for 25 percent of the Tigers' scoring in the five wins. He scored five goals in two of the games, including wins over Fordham and Mercyhurst. He also contributed three goals in a win over Gannon. After his performances in the first four games of the tournament, he was in the sights of Santa Clara in Princeton's fifth game. While the Broncos were able to keep him from scoring, he was able to contribute three assists to Princeton's 6-4 win.
