ATHENS, Ohio -- Charlie Neiman (Jr., Bellevue, Wash.) scored four goals to earn Co-Player of the Game honors and lead No. 15 Duke University to a come-from-behind win over the Georgia Institute of Technology in the second round of the 2008 National Collegiate Club Championship at Ohio University.
Duke, which fell to the University of Illinois-Chicago 10-6 in the opening round, needed to rally from a 5-3 halftime deficit to overtake the Yellow Jackets in the fourth period and hold off a comeback attempt to move onto a 5:10 p.m. game on November 15 versus the winner of a second round game between No. 5 ranked the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.
Georgia Tech, which fell to the University of Florida 6-2 in its first game, will meet the loser of the Penn-Columbia game at 2:50 p.m. on the 15th in the third round.
The game appeared primed to be a Georgia Tech runaway win in the closing minutes of the first half as Brian Twynham (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) scored on an exclusion opportunity at the 2:58 mark and Chris Bauerlein (So., Miami, Fla.) added his first goal of the game with 1:06 left in the half to give the Ramblin' Wreck at 5-3 lead.
Down by two at the break, the Blue Devils climbed back into the game in the third period as Neiman drilled a shot into the cage with 4:26 remaining and Will Garrigues (Gr., San Diego, Calif.) tacked on the equalizer at the 1:24 mark.
Duke's run continued in the opening minutes of the fourth period as Vinayak Nikam (Fr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored his first goal of the tournament to give the Blue Devils a their first lead of the game at 6-5 with 2:48 to play. Neiman added an insurance tally with 1:10 to go for the eventual game-winner as Bauerlein scored and ignited a Georgia Tech comeback attempt with 45 seconds to go.
Needing another goal to knot the game up at seven-all and force overtime, the Yellow Jackets could not crack the Duke defense again as goalie Ted Belsches (Sr., Dothan, Ala.) sealed off the goal mouth to preserve the win.
In cage, Belsches made 10 saves to share Player of the Game honors with Neiman, while Steve Larson (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) swatted away five shots for Georgia Tech.
