Sam Scioscia (#12) goes for the ball against Georgia Tech's Andres Arbelaez
ATHENS, Ohio -- Sam Scioscia (Sr., Danville, Calif.) scored with 46 seconds left in the second three-minute overtime period for the difference as Columbia University knocked off the Georgia Institute of Technology 7-5 in overtime to take a share of 13th place at the National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Ohio University..
The win marked Columbia's first in two trips to Nationals as the Lions had previously tied for 15th place with the University of Minnesota at the 2006 National Collegiate Club Tournament at Miami University of Ohio. Overall, Columbia ties with Ohio University for 13th place as the tournament bracket does not account for breaking ties at 13th and 15th.
Georgia Tech, which finishes in a tie with the University of Minnesota for 15th place, needed a dramatic comeback in the second half to force overtime.
Trailing 4-0 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets stung the Lions for a pair of goals in the third period and three in the fourth to pull even with Columbia at five-all with 4:12 to play in regulation.
The comeback began 56 seconds into the second half as Chris Bauerlein (So., Miami, Fla.) scored to pull the Ramblin' Wreck to within three at 4-1. Columbia regained a four-goal lead with 4:24 left in the period when Alexi Shaw (Sr., New York, N.Y.) found the back of cage with a blast from outside five meters, but Georgia Tech countered with a goal by Steven Winton (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) at the 1:10 mark to pull within 5-2 entering the fourth period.
Georgia Tech carried the momentum over into the new period as Logan McLeod (Gr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored on penalty shots at 6:21 and 4:54 to put the Yellow Jackets within striking distance at 5-4 with nearly five minutes to play. The team made good use of its seconds to put any doubt to rest if the game was headed to overtime as Bauerlein buried a natural goal at the 4:12 mark to equalize the score and bring on six extra minutes of play.
Neither team mustered much offense in the first three-minute overtime period as the teams combined for two shots on goal.
The pattern appeared ready to repeat itself in the second overtime period, but Scioscia's goal with 46 seconds left proved to be the game-winner. Joseph Matuk (Sr., La Mesa, Calif.) added an insurance goal on a desperation shot as the shot clock was winding down with nine seconds left in the second OT period for the 7-5 final.
The game did not appear headed to overtime in the first half as the Lions roared out to a 4-0 lead before intermission.
Player of the Game Daniel Kirel (Fr., Miami, Fla.) opened the scoring in the game by converting on an exclusion chance at 2:13 of the first period before Shaw tacked on an even-strength goal at the 1:03 mark for a 2-0 lead after seven minutes of play.
The margin expanded to 3-0 32 seconds into the second period wtih another goal from Kirel. He completed a first-half hat-trick with seven seconds remaining in the first half as he uncorked a shot which eluded Georgia Tech goalie Steve Larson (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) for a 4-0 lead and the dramatic second half/overtime finish.
Larson finished with six saves for the Yellow Jackets, while Alexandre Wright (Jr., Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) blocked six shots for Columbia.
