November 15, 2008

ATHENS, Ohio -- Jon Haga (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) and Evan Perry (Sr., Rockford, Mich.) combined for nine goals to power No. 1 Michigan State to a convincing 13-7 win over No. 4 Florida in the semifinals of the 2008 National Collegiate Club Championship on the campus of Ohio University. The Spartans will meet fellow No. 1 team Cal Poly State University for the national title on Sunday, November 16 at 12:45 p.m. as the game marks the first time two No. 1 teams will square off for the collegiate club ranks penultimate prize.
Florida, which had not appeared in the tourney since a ninth place finish in 2003 after placing 11th in 2002, third in 2001 and eighth in 2000, will look to equal their 2001 performance as the Gators will meet No. 3 Arizona State University, an 8-3 loser to Michigan State in the other semifinal, at 11:30 a.m. in the third place game.
The Spartans wasted little time in punching their ticket to the title game as MSU built a 5-1 lead by the end of the first period and led 7-2 by the end of the first half and 12-2 by the conclusion of the third period to clinch the program's fourth straight title game appearance and fifth since 1995.
For Florida, James Madison (Fr., Winter Park, Fla.) led the way with a hat-trick, while Travis Catron (So., Orlando, Fla.) stopped eight of MSU's 21 shots on goal.
Michigan State's meeting with Cal Poly in the title game marks the second time in as many years the Spartans and Mustangs will play for the title as the Mustangs needed a four goal performance from 2007 National Player of the Year Daniel Harris, including the game-winner in overtime, as Cal Poly overcame a 4-2 deficit in the second period to knock off then No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Michigan State University 7-6 in overtime to capture the 2007 National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
This time, history and experience may be on the Spartans' side as Cal Poly, which earned the No. 1 seed as the champion of the 2007 champion's division (Pacific Coast), will have to overcome the fact that the No. 1 seed has won only one title (2002-Cal Poly) in 15 prior National Collegiate Club Tournaments.
In terms of experience, Michigan State has appeared in the last three title tilts taking the 2006 crown and falling to Grand Valley State University (2005) and Cal Poly (2007) in the other two appearances. Plus, the Spartans already hold a win over the Mustangs this year, having defeated Cal Poly 12-11 in September to the table for what should be the ulimate battle for No. 1 and the national title.
