ATHENS, Ohio -- Jon Haga (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) scored five times, Brent Augustine (Sr., Rockford, Mich.) added a hat-trick and Evan Perry (Sr., Rockford, Mich.) tacked on a pair of goals as co-No. 1 Michigan State University clipped the wings of the No. 9 University of Oregon Ducks to take a 10-7 win and advance to the 2008 National Collegiate Club Championship semifinals at Ohio University.
Michigan State will meet the winner of a second round showdown between No. 4 University of Florida and No. 17 University of Illinois-Chicago at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday, November 15 for a national title game berth. This year, the Spartans are seeking their fourth straight national title game and third National Championship after capturing the 2000 and 2006 crowns.
Oregon will face the loser of the UIC-Florida game at 7:30 p.m. with a spot in the fifth place game on the line. Already the game is guaranteed of finishing better than in 2007 as the Ducks placed 10th in the 2007 National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
MSU wasted little time in jumping out to the lead and controlling the pace of the game as Haga punched through the Ducks' defense for a quick score 33 seconds into the game. The margin expanded with 2:34 left in the first period as Haga struck again before completing a hat-trick at the 4:23 mark of the second period for a 3-0 lead.
Perry capped off the Spartans' scoring run with a goal at the 1:01 mark to make it 4-0, but Oregon broke up MSU's first-half shutout bid with a marker by Zachary Yensen (So., Portland, Ore.) to make it 4-1 with 21 seconds left in the first half. The Spartans got the goal back at the horn as Haga's Hail Mary rifleshot from outside found nothing but net for a 5-1 lead at the break.
The margin expanded to 6-1 less than two minutes into the second half as Perry converted on a penalty shot opportunity with 5:22 left in the third period following a call on Oregon's Andrew Del Carlo (Sr., Ashland, Ore.).
Oregon was unable to overcome the deficit as Michigan State pushed the margin to 10-3 with 4:02 left in the fourth period and held off a comeback bid in which the Ducks received four goals to take the 10-7 victory.
In cage, Ben Shantz (So., Rockford, Mich.) picked up the win for MSU making seven saves before being relieved by Daniel Jenkins (Fr., Ann Arbor, Mich.), while Tony Nuccio (Fr., San Clemente, Calif.) and Naoki Wada (Sr., Tokyo, Japan) combined for seven saves for Oregon.
