No. 16 Texas A&M Plows Under No. 5 Penn 6-5 in National Collegiate Club 9th Place Game

Penn's Zach Zwarenstein defends a backhand against Texas A&M
ATHENS, Ohio -- Brian Carey (Sr., Belvidere, N.J.) and Brian Coyle (So., Houston, Texas) both scored pairs of goals to key No. 16 Texas A&M University to a 6-5 win over No. 5 the University of Pennsylvania in the ninth place game at the 2008 National Collegiate Club Championship.
Following a scoreless first period the Aggies went ahead 2-0 before halftime as Coyle and Matt Davis (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) broke through for goals at 6:34 and 2:32, respectively, of the second period.
Penn came back to tie the game midway through the third period as Benjamin Naecker (Sr., Pasadena, Calif.) converted on an exclusion chance at 5:36 and added a natural goal at 4:23 to knot the game at two-all.
The teams traded goals with A&M going back in front at 2:55 on a tally by Coyle, Jay Fantone (Gr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) retied the game at three-all with 2:43 on the clock before Carey scored at even strength (1:45) and Kyle Mendez (Sr., Houston, Texas) put home a score with 10 ticks left in the period to put the Aggies ahead 5-3 entering the fourth period.
Davis notched the game-winner 41 seconds into the final seven minutes of play beating Penn goalie Michael Rico (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) to go out in front 6-3. The Quakers' rallied back with an even-strength score by John Gillette (Sr., Bay Shore, Trinidad) and an exclusion goal by Fantone at 4:12 and 1:10, respectively, but the comeback bid fell short as the Aggies held on for the win.
Rico finished the game with 10 saves for Penn, while John Fitzgerald (Jr., Singapore City, Singapore) swatted away seven shots for Texas A&M to earn Player of the Game honors.
