No. 17 University of Illinois-Chicago Burns No. 13 Dartmouth College 5-4 in 7th Place Game at National Collegiate Club Championship

November 16, 2008

Andrew Peterson (#7)

ATHENS, Ohio --  Andrew Peterson (Jr,. Mundelein, Ill.) scored with 55 seconds left in the fourth period for the deciding factor as the No. 17 ranked Flames of the University of Illinois-Chicago rallied from a 3-2 deficit at the end of the third period to overcome No. 13 Dartmouth College 5-4 in the seventh place game of the 2008 National Collegiate Club Championship at Ohio University.

Peterson, who added a goal with 26 seconds left in the third period to pull the Flames to within 3-2, earned Player of the Game honors for his performance as UIC improved dramatically on their previous finish at Nationals (13th in 2006).

The 2008 Missouri Valley Division runner-up, UIC led only once in the game as the Flames overcame deficits of 3-1 and 4-2 in the closing and opening minutes of the second and third periods, respectively, to pull off the win.  UIC advanced to the tournament in part because Missouri Valley champion Lindenwood University accepted a bid to and won the Division III National Collegiate Club Tournament two weekends ago at Villanova University.

Dartmouth jumped out to a 1-0 lead 1:55 into the game as Doug Nelson (Jr., Hinsdale, Ill.) beat UIC goalie Derreck Brace (Sr., La Grange, Ill.).  The Flames knotted the score at the 6:07 mark of the second period as Vasily Baycharov (Sr., Omsk, Siberia) put a shot inside the left post as the Big Green and UIC entered halftime tied at 1-1.

Nelson put the Big Green back in front 1:23 into the second half with his second score of the day at the 5:27 mark.  The margin expanded to 3-1 with 1:13 remaining in the period as Porter Diehl (Sr., Princeton, N.J.) netted an apparent insurance goal, but Peterson punched in his first tally with 26 seconds on the clock to end the period.

Dartmouth added another goal at the 4:24 mark of the fourth period courtesy a shot by Scott Sorensen (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), but the Flames turned up the heat down the stretch with Baycharov scoring again at 1:26 to tie the game and set-up Peterson's game-winner.

The UIC defense finished off the game collecting a steal with 38 seconds to play to run the clock down to three seconds to play.  Dartmouth was unable to move the ball past half tank prior to the clock expiring as the Flames held on for victory and seventh place in the final tournament standings.

Brace finished with five saves on nine shots-on-goal, while Kyle Finnegan (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) stopped four of nine shots-on-goal for Dartmouth.
