Wheaton Finishes Fifth at National Collegiate III Championship

KENOSHA, Wisc. - The Wheaton College water polo team finished in fifth place after the final day of the National Collegiate III Women's Water Polo Championship.

The Thunder went 0-4 at the two-day nationals and wrapped up their season at 13-16 overall. Heather Crockett earned Second Team All-Tournament while Emma Higgins picked up Honorable Mention All-Tournament.

"The ladies got to see what it will take to be competitive with these top teams," Wheaton head coach Jon Lederhouse said. "It was a good learning experience for them. It showed what we need to work on our consistency game to game. But it was very good to play these better teams."

The Thunder started the second day of the tournament with a thrilling match vs. Carthage College which the Lady Reds won 8-7. Wheaton trailed 8-5 entering the fourth period, but the Thunder outshot Carthage 4-1 in attempts on goal to keep it close. Crockett scored four gols, Kathryn Sheehy tallied two goals and Jessica McGee added one goal.

Wheaton finished the year with a 14-8 loss vs. Occidental College. Crockett scored four more goals, Morgan Sorenson had two goals while Higgins and Sheehy totaled one goal apiece.

On the first day of the tournament, Wheaton lost to Grove City College 10-4. The Thunder trailed 5-3 at the half and got two goals from Linley Sullivan and one goal each from Crockett and Emily Bellfi.

In the second match, Wheaton fell to California Lutheran University 18-7 after falling behind 11-2 at the half. The Thunder tallied two goals each from Higgins and Crockett and one goal from Sheehy, Jessica McGee and Amy Nussbaum. ???
