Johns Hopkins' Alex Whittam Named October 26 Men's Varsity Southern Division Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins University freshman Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) scored nine goals with five assists, 10 steals and five ejections drawn in four games to help the Blue Jays to the 2009 Division III Eastern Championship title and earn the October 26 Varsity Southern Division Rookie of the Week award.

The accolade marks his third Rookie of the Week honor as he previously garnered the award on September 14 and October 19. 

In a 4-0 week for JHU, Whittam helped the Blue Jays earn their 12th Division III Eastern Championship in program history as he was part of a Hopkins offense which outscored its opponents 88-13 during the course of the championship, including a 24-6 victory over host Washington & Jefferson College in the title game.

Against Connecticut College in a 23-3 win, he notched pairs of goals and assists to go along with three steals and an ejection drawn before posting two goals, an assist and a steal in a 23-2 victory over Pennsylvania State University-Erie, The Behrend College.  Versus Washington & Jefferson College in the Blue Jays final first round game, he scored twice and added an assist with two steals and three ejections drawn as JHU handled W&J 18-2.

In the title game, he contributed a hat-trick with an assist, a field block, four steals and an ejection drawn asthe Blue Jays earned their second-straight CWPA Division III Eastern title after electing not to compete in the 2007 tournament.

Hopkins has won five of the last six titles and recorded its 12th overall crown since the tournament started in 1991.
