Mercyhurst Stops Washington & Jefferson 10-5 to Clinch Seventh Place at Southern Division Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College men's water polo team snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday by defeating Washington & Jefferson, 10-5, in the seventh-place game at the 2009 CWPA Southern Championships in Lewisburg, Pa.

Overall, the Lakers finish the tournament with a 1-2 record after suffering a 16-8 setback to Gannon and an 11-6 defeat to No. 20 Bucknell on Saturday.

Junior Alex Moggridge, who led the Lakers with five goals against the Bison, paced the offense with three goals. Junior Kane Ashton and freshman Ian Tasman each added two scores while freshmen Luis Solis, William Page and Adam Borgman found the back of the cage once.

Mercyhurst never trailed in the game by building a 4-1 advantage in first and adding to it with two goals in each of the next three quarters.

With the win, the Lakers finish their season with a 13-6 record, marking the fourth-straight season with 12 or more wins.
