No. 4 Arizona Steamrolls Past Georgia Tech 14-2 in National Collegiate Club Tourney Opening Round
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Alex Negronida (Sr., Evanston, Ill.) scored four goals to lead all players and earn Player of the Game honors as No. 4-nationally ranked University of Arizona pounded its way out to an 8-1 lead on the way to a 14-2 victory over Georgia Tech in the opening round of the 2009 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Florida.
The victory puts the Wildcats into the next round where Arizona will face the winner of a first round game between No. 7 University of Washington and Virginia Tech University on Saturday, November 14 at 12:30 p.m., while Georgia Tech will meet the loser of the Washington-Virginia Tech at 7:30 p.m. this evening in the consolation round.
The game was all Arizona for 26 of the 28 minutes in the contest as the Wildcats rattled off four goals in the first period with pairs of markers by Cameron Simmons (Sr., Renton, Wash.) and Negronida to ignite an offense which ran out to a 7-0 lead through the first 10 minutes of play.
Leading 7-0 following an exclusion score by Alex Williams (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) at the 2:59 mark of the second period, the Wildcats saw their lead cut into as Chris Bauerlein (So., Miami, Fla.) pumped in a score with 1:37 left in the first half to pull within six goals. However, Andrew Wolff (So., New Canaan, Conn.) returned a seven-goal margin to Arizona as he scored with 11 seconds left on the clock to make it an 8-1 game at halftime.
The teams traded goals in the third period before the Wildcats rattled off five goals in the fourth period for the 12-goal victory.
In cage, Michael O'Rourke (Fr., Winter Springs, Fla.) took the loss for Georgia Tech, while Evan Zaggy (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Michael Meier (Sr., Coto De Caza, Ariz.) combined for five saves in leading Arizona to victory.
