No. 1 UCLA Manages Minnesota 19-2 in National Collegiate Club Championship First Round
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- 13 University of California-Los Angeles players scored as the No. 1-nationally ranked Bruins manhandled University of Minnesota 19-2 in the opening round of the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship on the campus of the University of Florida.
Leading the way for the Bruins was Austin Gable (So., San Diego, Calif.) who buried three shots, while four other UCLA players added pairs and eight tallied solo scores as the top-ranked team in the nation opened the quest for the 2009 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship.
The game was an offensive onslaught as UCLA opened up a 9-0 lead by the of the first period and carried a 13-0 margin into halftime before Minnesota's Cyrus Jamnejad (Gr., Los Angeles, Calif.) beat Bruins' back-up goalie Alex Jozefov (Jr., Palo Alto, Calif.) with 5:33 left in the third period on an exclusion chance.
David Brajkovic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) tacked on the Golden Gophers' second goat at the 4:42 mark to pull his team to within 11, but the Bruins came out of their slumber to register another marker in the third period and five in the fourth to advance to the next round.
In cage, Jozefov made three saves in relief of Mike Scott (So., Glenside, Calif.), who added two saves in seven minutes of work in the first period, while Minnesota's Matt Dahlberg (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) registered on six saves.
UCLA will meet the winner of a first round game between No. 19 Lindenwood University and No. 17 Pennsylvania State University at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, November 14 with a berth to the semifinals at stake. Minnesota will next meet the loser of the Lindenwood-PSU game at 8:40 p.m. this evening in the consolation bracket.
