PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Gannon University men's water polo team opened the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship with a pair of losses to Johns Hopkins University (14-3 L) and George Washington University (15-3 L) at Princeton University's DeNunzio Pool.
Johns Hopkins is ranked fifth in the latest CWPA Division III rankings, while George Washington is tabbed sixth in the latest CWPA poll.
In the opener, Johns Hopkins led 3-0 after one quarter and 8-1 at halftime. The Blue Jays increased the lead to 10-2 after three quarters, before settling for a 14-3 victory.
Phil Myrick (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Andrew McLellan (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Ben Feasley (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery Blair) each had a goal in the contest. Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) recorded 15 blocks between the pipes.
In the nightcap, George Washington took control with a 4-1 lead after one quarter and a 9-1 advantage at halftime. The Colonials had a 14-1 edge after three quarters on the way to the final score.
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan/Namiki) found the back of the net twice. Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) added the final goal. Zoellick turned away seven shots in defeat.
