ERIE, Pa. -- The Gannon University men's water polo team finished the 2011 season with a 19-6 win over Pennsylvania State University-Behrend as the Golden Knights topped the Lions during the ninth-place match at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship hosted by Princeton University.
Gannon outscored PSU-Behrend in each of the four quarters en route to the win. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter. Gannon then exploded for six goals in the second quarter, limiting Penn State-Behrend to three scores.
The Gannon offense continued to roll in the second half, netting five goals in the third quarter, and four in the fourth. The Lions managed just three second-half goals against the Gannon defense.
Gannon was led by Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan/Namiki) who scored five times during the Gannon win. Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) and Phil Myrick (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) each added four scores in their final collegiate matches. Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) had 11 blocks in goal.
Gannon finished the 2011 season with a 8-17 overall record. The loss moved Penn State-Behrend to 6-17 overall.
