BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Kyle Wertz (Sr., San Diego, Calif./Westlake) of the United States Naval Academy scored 10 goals and handed out six assists in four games to lead the Midshipmen to the 2011 Southern Division Championship and earn the November 7 Men's Varsity Southern Division Player of the Week award.
The totals raise his season scoring totals to 43 goals and 26 assists for 69 points in just 17 games, and 241 points (171 goals, 70 assists) for his career as he moved into 10th place on the school's all-time points list.
His best game of the weekend at Princeton University's DeNunzio Pool came in the tournament title game against the No. 15-ranked/host Tigers as Wertz pumped in five goals for the margin of victory in a 10-5 win. The win improved No. 16-ranked Navy's overall record to 22-6 and earned the Midshipmen their 13th CWPA Southern Division Tournament title in just 19 seasons. Navy improved to 58-6 all-time in the tournament.
In the tournament semifinals, following victories over Notre Dame College (19-8 W) and Salem International University (16-3 W) in the first and second rounds, he tossed in three goals and dished out three assists to factor over half of the Mids scoring in an 11-5 win versus No. 19 Bucknell University.
With the victories, Navy claims the No. 2 position for the CWPA Eastern Championship on November 18-20 at Harvard University as the Southern Division Championship.
Due to there being no fair way to seed the teams, the positions for the championship are derived based on the previous season's Eastern Championship results. As St. Francis College (N.Y.) of the Northern Division winning the Eastern Championship last year at Bucknell, the Northern Division champion (St. Francis) will hold the No. 1 position in the championship field, with the Southern Division champion (Navy) holding the No. 2 position. The remainder of the six positions alternate between the two divisions with the remaining Northern Division qualifiers (Brown University, Iona College, Harvard) holding the No. 3, 5 and 7 spots, respectively, while the Mids' three fellow Southern Division members (Princeton, Bucknell and Johns Hopkins University) claim the No. 4, 6 and 8 spots.
