INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Water Polo Championship Committee has announced that Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) officials Mark Koganov, Alex Stankevitch and Michael Goldenberg comprise three of the four officials selected to the 2011 NCAA Men's Championship officiating crew for this weekend's championship at the University of California-Berkeley.
It marks the first time three East Coast officials were selected to the NCAA crew as the trio joins Steve Rotsart to officiate the championship tournament featuring conference champion the University of California-Los Angeles (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), the University of California-San Diego (Western Water Polo Association) and Princeton University (CWPA), along with At-Large selection the University of Southern California, on December 3-4.
Goldenberg, Koganov and Stankevitch each have prior experience on the collegiate sport's biggest stage the trio are regular selections to the NCAA Championship crew.
The first duo of East Coast officials to call an NCAA title game when the pair whistled the 2009 Men's NCAA Championship tilt between the University of Southern California and the University of California-Los Angeles at Princeton University, Stankevitch and Koganov last appeared on the 2011 NCAA Women's Championship crew at the University of Michigan.
The selections, which can not be announced prior to the NCAA Championship meeting at the site on the day prior to the first date of competition per NCAA rules for all 89 championships, are based on referrals from the three participating conferences (CWPA, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Western Water Polo Association) and are selected in consultation with NCAA Coordinator of Officials Dr. Bob Corb.
