Collegiate Water Polo Association Releases 2014 Women's Varsity Preseason Polls; University of Southern California Starts at No. 1

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The top team in the nation remains unchanged from the final rankings of 2013 as the University of Southern California tops the Women's National Top 20 to highlight the 2014 Women's Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10, CWPA Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Preseason Polls released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).

The top teams in each ranking remain unchanged from the final balloting of 2013 as USC (National Top 20), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Division III Top 10), Princeton University (CWPA Top 10) and Connecticut College (CWPA Division III Top Five) will begin 2014 in the same position the quartet concluded 2013 - at No. 1.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Golden Coast Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2014 Women's Varsity National Top 20

The University of Southern California, which knocked off Stanford University 10-9 in triple sudden death overtime for the 2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at Harvard University, remains the top-ranked team in the country as the Women of Troy top the 2014 Women's Varsity National Top 20 Preseason Poll.

Behind USC (99 points), Stanford (96 points) and the University of California-Los Angeles (89 points) hold onto their final rankings from 2013 at No. 2 and 3, respectively, while the University of California (81 points) and Arizona State University (81 points) will start the 2014 season in a tie at No. 4.

The University of California-Irvine (76 points) and the University of Hawaii (70 points) exchange their final spots from 2013 to stand at No. 6 and 7, while Princeton University (59 points) and San Jose State University (59 points) rise to tie at No. 8.

San Diego State University (56 points) completes the Top 10, while Long Beach State University (55 points), the University of California-San Diego (38 points), the University of Michigan (36 points), California State University-Northridge (32 points) and Indiana University (28 points) rate at No. 11-to-15.

Loyola Marymount University (26 points), the University of California-Santa Barbara (21 points), the University of California-Davis (17 points), Hartwick College (15 points) and the University of the Pacific (11 points) complete the Top 20 with Iona College (9 points) receiving votes.

2014 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10

Defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champion Pomona-Pitzer Colleges remains on top of the small college teams as the Sagehens open the 2014 season at No. 1 in the Women's Varsity Division III Top 10 Preseason Poll.

The Sagehens (97 points) hold a seven-point lead over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (90 points) for the top spot in the rankings, while the University of Redlands (89 points), Occidental College (84 points) and California Lutheran University (81 points) complete an All-California Top Five.

2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III champion Connecticut College (68 points) comes in at No. 6, with Whittier College (61 points), Chapman University (57 points), the University of La Verne (51 points) and Grove City College (50 points) rounding out the Top 10.

Washington & Jefferson College (36 points) and Macalester College (11 points) also received votes.

2014 Women's CWPA Top 10

The 2012 and 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) champion Tigers of Princeton University, which finished in Fifth Place at the 2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship with a 12-10 overtime victory against the University of California-San Diego, picks up 100 points to start the 2014 season as a unanimous No. 1 selection in the CWPA Top 10 Preseason Poll.

Behind Princeton, the University of Michigan (92 points) and Indiana University (92 points) are tied at No. 2, with Hartwick College (86 points) coming in at No. 4.

Brown University (78 points), Harvard University (77 points), Bucknell University (69 points), George Washington University (66 points), Gannon University (44 points), Connecticut College (36 points) and Mercyhurst University (35 points) complete the Top 10.

2014 Women's CWPA Division III Top 5

Connecticut College, which claimed the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship, maintains the No. 1 position in the CWPA Division III Top Five Preseason Poll.  

The Camels (99 points) are the only team in the Top Five to maintain its position from the final 2013 rankings as Washington & Jefferson College (94 points), which finished third a year ago, bounds up to No. 2.

Grove City College (92 points) begins 2014 at No.3, while Macalester College (83 points) and Carthage College (82 points) rate at  No. 4 and 5, respectively, to complete the league's Division III rankings.
