BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Defending National Champion Stanford University remains the top-ranked team in the nation as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2018 Women’s Varsity Week 1/January 17 National Top 25, Division III Top 10, CWPA Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Division III), the University of Michigan (CWPA Top 10) and Macalester College (CWPA Division III Top Five) also retain top-billing in their respective rankings

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), the Golden Coast Conference, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Big West Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the CWPA based on the cumulative results of the season, the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2018 Women’s Varsity National Top 25 (Week 1)

Stanford University, which captured the 2017 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship, remains the top-ranked team in the Week 1/January 17 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Varsity National Top 25 Poll.

The Cardinal (99 points), who fall one point shy of rating as a unanimous top selection, stand at No. 1 in a Top 25 Poll which experiences minor changes following a week in which only two games occurred.

The University of Southern California (94 points), which joined the University of California-Los Angeles (92 points) in competing against Loyola Marymount University over the weekend, is the first team to move as the Women of Troy break out of a tie with the Bruins to claim sole possession of the No. 2 spot.  UCLA drops back to No. 3, while the University of California (91 points), Arizona State University (81 points), the University of Hawaii (76 points), the University of California-Irvine (75 points), the University of Michigan (74 points), University of the Pacific (73 points) and Long Beach State University (63 points) remain locks at No. 4-to-10, respectively.

The University of California-Davis (58 points) and San Diego State University (50 points) follow by sticking at No. 11 and 12, while Indiana University (46 points) and Hartwick College (44 points) shatter a tie at No. 13 to stand at No. 13 and 14 this week. 

San Jose State University (39 points) and the University of California-San Diego (38 points) also move apart as the teams now rate at No. 14 and 16, respectively, after tying at No. 15 in the preseason voting.

Follow the demise of back-to-back ties at No. 13 and 15 from last week, Harvard University (36 points) and Princeton University (36 points) balance out at No. 17. 

The University of California-Santa Barbara (31 points), Wagner College (31 points), California State University-Northridge (21 points), Loyola Marymount University (18 points), Marist College (12 points) and Iona College (4 points) remain at No. 19-to-24.

The final change in the Top 25 comes in the final spot as Fresno State University (3 points), California Baptist University (3 points) and California State University-Monterey Bay (3 points) move from the ranks of receiving votes to tying for the final berth.

2018 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 1)

Due to none of the Division III teams competing on the opening weekend of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges tops the Week 1/January 17 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll.

The Sagehens (100 points) move up by a point from their 99 preseason poll performance to rate as a unanimous top selection, while Whittier College (92 points), California Lutheran University (90 points), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (84 points), Chapman University (81 points) complete the Top Five.

The University of La Verne (76 points), Occidental College (67 points), the University of Redlands (53 points), Macalester College (47 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (34 points) complete the Top 10.

2018 Women’s Varsity Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 (Week 1)

Two-time defending Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion the University of Michigan remains a unanimous top pick in the Week 1/January 17 Women’s Varsity CWPA Top 10 Poll.

Michigan (100 points) leads a Top 10 league poll in which the Top Five remains unchanged with Indiana University (93 points), Hartwick College (92 points), Harvard University (84 points) and Brown University (76 points) sticking at No. 2-to-5 behind the Wolverines.

The sole change in the Top 10 comes at No. 6 as Bucknell University (74 points) acquires company from Princeton University (74 points) as the Tigers bump up from No. 7.

George Washington University (65 points) and Saint Francis University (62 points) completes the league’s Division I representation at No. 8 and 9, while Macalester College (22 points) and Connecticut College (22 points) are tied at No. 10.

2018 Women’s Varsity Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Top 10 (Week 1)

Macalester College, which captured the 2017 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship at home, remains at No. 1 in the CWPA Division III Top Five Poll.

Macalester (97 points), which joined Grove City College (2010-2012) and Connecticut College (2013-2016) as the sole teams to ever claim the CWPA Division III league crown, continues to hold a two-points lead over Carthage College (95 points) with five-time (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016) league runner-up Washington & Jefferson College (72 points) rating at No. 3

Connecticut (70 points) and Monmouth College (67 points) complete the Top Five.
