BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA)/Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC)/Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Commissioner Dan Sharadin announced the addition of the Long Island University men’s water polo into the NWPC starting in the Fall of 2023.

LIU was voted into membership by the CWPA’s Board of Directors as the Sharks maintain the conference’s size at seven institutions.

“The addition of Long Island University to the Northeast Water Polo Conference is a great addition for our league,” noted Sharadin.

Located in Brooklyn, N.Y., Long Island will compete against Brown University, Connecticut College, Harvard University, Iona University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton University and keep the membership of varsity men’s programs in the New York metropolitan area at three with Iona and Fordham University of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC).  St. Francis College Brooklyn – which competed in the NWPC – elected to eliminate all varsity athletics at the institution following the conclusion of the 2022-23 academic year.

“I am happy to welcome LIU to the Northeast Conference,” added Harvard head coach Ted Minnis.  “I have always enjoyed going to New York and Brooklyn, and am glad that our student-athletes will still get to experience it.”

A schedule for the 2023 season is currently being discussed and compiled among the six institutions with an anticipated release during the early summer of 2023.

“In the era when men’s teams are dwindling, it is encouraging to see schools like Long Island sponsor the sport and even better when they choose to be a part of our conference,” continued Sharadin.

“We look forward to some great competition in the coming years.”
