SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Brown University men’s water polo team fell to No. 10-ranked San Jose State University by a 16-10 count to close out play at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament. Cole Atwell was the leading scorer for the Bears, tallying four goals. Ugo Piovan led Brown with seven saves, while Joe Gallagher had four stops in cage.

Brown jumped on top early with Leo Berkman and Atwell each scoring to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Over the next two minutes San Jose State went on a run, netting four goals before Atwell ended the run, making it 4-3 in favor of the Spartans. San Jose State tallied one more goal before the end of the first.

Down three early in the second, Brown got back-to-back goals from Filip Aleksic to get within one. With just over a minute left in the first half, Matt Simko‘s goal tied the game at six-all=. Another late goal by San Jose State made the score 7-6 going into halftime.

The game broke open in the third quarter as San Jose State went on a 6-1 run. The only Brown goal over the run was from Aleksic, his third of the game. Berkman scored his second goal of the game with seven seconds left in the quarter but the Spartans led 13-8 with eight minutes left to play.

Atwell’s final two goals of the game came in the last quarter but they were the only two goals Brown scored over the final frame as San Jose State netted three for the final margin.
