LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Mia Barr scored four times to earn Player of the Game notice as Big Ten Division Champion/No. 2-ranked the University of Michigan handled Northwest Division Champion/No. 13 the University of Washington, 17-6, in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of California-Los Angeles’ Park Pool on the grounds of the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
Michigan advances to a 4:00 p.m. semifinal showdown with defending National Champion/Sierra Pacific Division Champion/No. 1 the University of California. The victor of the game will play at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, for the National Championship, while the loser of the Cal-Michigan semifinal will battle for third place at 11:30 a.m.
Washington slips into the consolation side of the championship bracket and will face Boston University at 2:50 p.m. later today for a berth to the Fifth Place game on Sunday, May 7, at 10:15 a.m.. A loss places the Huskies in the seventh place contest.at 9:00 a.m. on May 7.
The Wolverines wasted little time in collaring Washington as Michigan opened up a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and led 10-2 by halftime.
Ahead by eight at the break, the Wolverines outscored the Huskies 2-0 and 5-4 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to finish out the contest with an 11-goal victory.
For Michigan, Barr (four),Mina Dizdarevic (two), Emma Kaipainen (two), Annika Olsen (two) and Claire Tuttle (two) netted multi-goal games as the quintet combined for 12 of the Wolverines’ 17 scores. Mara Logan, Meredith Holm, Lucy Baker, Alicia Paans and Luisa Nierhoff each notched solo markers to aid a combined 13 save effort by goalkeepers Ava Dominick (six) and Luis Nierhoff (seven).
Abigail Sylvester (five) and Gracie Sheehan accounted for Washington’s offense with Julie Lubas making four saves.
