BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — A total of 102 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) student-athletes are among 395 players nominated and selected to the 2018 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Men’s All-Academic Team.

Divided into three teams based on cumulative grade point average, league members garnered 36 Outstanding (4.00-3.71), 41 Superior (3.70-3.41) and 25 Excellent (3.40-3.20) honors as 13 institutions submitted nominees for the team in the third season of play for the MAWPC.  The total comprises 25.82% of the total 395 athletes named to the ACWPC All-Academic Team (111 Outstanding, 163 Superior, 121 Excellent).

The total is four less than last year’s 106 total from 14 schools and 23 more 2016’s tally of 79 from 13 institutions.

Wagner College (nine Outstanding, six Superior, one Excellent) tops the MAWPC selections with 16, while both Fordham University (one Outstanding, five Superior, five Excellent) and Salem University (nine Outstanding, two Superior) posted 11 awards.

The United States Naval Academy (four Outstanding, one Superior, five Excellent) earned 10 nods with Gannon University (one Outstanding, five Superior, two Excellent), Johns Hopkins University (three Outstanding, five Superior) and La Salle University (three Outstanding, three Superior, two Excellent) recording eight selections.

In addition, six of the 26 schools that broke a 3.0 grade point average to earn Team All-Academic recognition compete in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference. Salem (3.74) stands as the best academic team in the nation for the second time in as many years by achieving a .01 lead over runner-up the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (3.73) of the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC).  Wagner (3.55), Johns Hopkins (3.37), Fordham (3.25), Gannon (3.07) and George Washington (3.017) also exceeded the 3.0 mark.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete’s head coach must be a member of the ACWPC, while the athlete must attain a grade point average in excess of 3.20.

In total, 177 student-athletes that compete in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) administered league earned recognition as the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) collected 75 (30 Outstanding, 25 Superior, 20 Excellent) laurels.

Further, institutions from East Coast conferences led the Team All-Academic Awards as 13 of 26 schools that topped a 3.0 GPA compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC.  Eight schools that compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC stand among the Top 10 teams in the country, including the Top Four and six of the first seven.
