NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Goalie Ellen Beauchemin (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) made 10 saves to claim Player of the Game notice as Atlantic Division Champion the University of Virginia led throughout to top New York Division runner-up Cornell University, 4-2, in a 13th/15th place game to conclude Day Two of the 2019 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Notre Dame’s Rolfs Aquatic Center.

  • Due to the win, Virginia ties with Mid-Atlantic Division Champion/No. 12-ranked Pennsylvania State University for 13th place in the final 16-team standings, while Cornell ties Texas Division runner-up/No. 18 the University of Texas for 15th place.  Penn State downed Texas by a 5-4 count in the game immediately preceding the Virginia-Cornell clash. 
  • Due to time constraints, both 13th and 15th place are not played out in the final tournament standings.
  • The Wahoos jumped on the scoreboard with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter as Caroline O’Keefe (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.) drove in a shot to stake Virginia to a 1-0 margin.
  • Cornell knotted the score at one-all with 1:39 to go in the second quarter as Nikki Krisztinicz (So., McLean, Va.) connected on an equalizer to deadlock the squads entering halftime.
  • Virginia regained the lead at the 5:18 mark of the third quarter as Katie Pajewski (Sr., Charlottesville, Va.) whirled in a go-ahead strike to put the Wahoos in front to stay at 2-1.
  • Madeline Williamson (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) insulated the lead to 3-1 40 seconds into the fourth quarter courtesy a man-up goal (6:20). 
  • Christabella Forest (So., Chino Hills, Calif.) trimmed the Big Red’s deficit back to one at 3-2 with 4:55 left in the final frame, but Emma Chin Lee (Fr., Trinidad and Tobago) converted on a six-on-five bid with 4:30 on the clock to establish the 4-2 finale.
  • For Virginia, the quartet of O’Keefe, Pajewski, Williamson and Chin Lee all scored once in support of Beauchemin’s efforts in cage.
  • Krisztinicz and Obaiah accounted for Cornell’s pair of markers.
  • Cassie Benson (Gr., Pocatello, Idaho) played the first and third quarters for the Big Red between the pipes with five saves and two goals allowed to take the loss as Cornell never regained the lead after losing it in the third quarter.  Maura Coughlin (Gr., Mundelein, Ill.) appeared in the two and fourth quarters with four saves and two goals permitted.
  • The 15th place finish follows previous 11th (2018), 13th (2012) and 15th (2005, 2006, 2011) place marks at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship for the Big Red.
  • Virginia notches its second 13th spot as the Wahoos previously placed 10th (2003), 11th (2016) and 13th (2017) in three prior trips to the National Collegiate Club Championship.
