MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Division III No. 8-ranked Macalester College water polo team scored 36 goals in conference victories over Wittenberg University, 18-9, and Monmouth College, 18-7, to improve to 5-3 on the season and 3-1 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III-West Region action.
In the morning match against Wittenberg, Macalester led 6-4 after two quarters before breaking the game open with six goals in the third quarter. First-year Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) tallied three goals in the quarter, which ended with the Scots leading 12-5. Two goals apiece from senior Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic) and sophomore Riley Waters (Portland, Ore./St. Mary’s Academy) helped Macalester register another six-goal quarter in the fourth to close out the win.
Galasso, Hollingsworth and senior Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) each scored four goals, while Waters and first-year Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) tallied three goals apiece.
Against Monmouth, Macalester continued to pour it on offensively, taking an 8-2 lead after two quarters before scoring seven goals in the third quarter for a 15-4 bulge. Six different Scots found the net in the third, with Galasso scoring twice. Galasso finished with six goals against Monmouth, giving her 10 for the day and 20 on the weekend. Mullery scored three goals, while senior Naomi Strait (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton), Hollingsworth and Waters had two goals apiece. First-year Malia Borg (Charleston, S.C./Academic Magnet), sophomore Annika Krueger (Emerald Hills, Calif./Sequoia) and junior Adeline Steward-Nolan (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) also found the net.
