HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Annaluisa Carrillo (So., Bend, Ore.) made her fifth goal of the game count the most as the second-year launched a shot from dead center on the cage approximately eight meters out with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter to allow No. 15-ranked/Northwest Division Champion the University of Oregon to elude No. 10/Texas Division Champion Texas A&M University, 8-7, in the Fifth Place game of the 2022 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the Huntsville Aquatics Center.
For Oregon – which previously finished Second (2008), Third (2009), Fourth (2001, 2010, 2011), Fifth (2007), Eighth (2005, 2015), Ninth (2018), 10th (2002), 11th (2014), 13th (2006) and 15th (2012) in the program’s prior trips to the National Collegiate Club Championship – the game allows the Ducks to add a seventh Top Five finish to the program’s legacy in women’s club water polo.
Texas A&M – which made the program’s 10th appearance at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship following berths in 2001 (Eighth), 2005 (12th), 2008 (15th), 2010 (13th), 2013 (12th), 2014 (12th), 2015 (15th), 2017 (Ninth) and 2018 (13th) – finishes in Sixth Place.
The Aggies appeared primed to run away with the contest in the first four minutes of competition as Aubrey Mai (5:16, man-up) and Emily Traynor (4:28, 4:01) racked up back-to-back-to-back goals to put Texas A&M into the lead at 3-0.
Oregon quacked back, however, as Carrillo (3:07, 1:54) and Mary Grosswendt (So., Newbury Park, Calif.) (1:13) waddled through the water and winged in three scores in under two minutes to balance the scoreboard at three-all heading into the second quarter.
The Ducks pulled ahead at 4-3 via a power-play strike by Olivia Daniels (Jr., Portland, Ore.) with 4:24 left in the second quarter, but consecutive scores by Traynor (4:07) and Avery Davis (3:35) turned the tables on Oregon as Texas A&M went ahead 5-4.
The remainder of the first half belonged to the waterfowls as Carrillo (3:04, man-up), Gianna Paden (Sr., Livermore, Calif.) (32 seconds) and Daniels (11 seconds) stroked in shots to stake Oregon to a 7-5 advantage on the scoreboard heading into intermission.
However, the Aggies delivered a response in the third quarter as Traynor tossed in tallies at 2:40 and 48 seconds to even the damage at seven-all.
Neither team was able to score again until Carrillo’s deciding blow with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter to allow Oregon to fly home with a Top Five finish.
For Oregon, Carrillo (four) and Daniels (two) posted multi-goal games with Grosswendt and Paden notching solo markers. Goalkeeper Bailey Baker (Jr., Selma, Calif.) made three saves to earn the win.
Across the tank, Traynor scored five times with Davis and Mai adding single tallies for Texas A&M. On defense, goalies Julia Klein and Corine Kaderli combined for three saves.
