DAVIS, Calif. — The No. 11-ranked Princeton University Tigers went the distance in falling by an 8-7 score in sudden victory versus the Anteaters of No. 12 the University of California-Irvine on the final day of 2022 Aggie Roundup hosted by the University of California-Davis.
Princeton began the contest with the first two goals, but UC-Irvine quickly countered to tie the contest after eight minutes. Goals from Luke Johnston and Logan McCarroll in the second quarter put the Tigers in front, 4-2, entering halftime.
Both teams exchanged goals before a tally from McCarroll right before the conclusion of the third quarter put Princeton ahead 6-3 heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.
However, UC-Irvine rallied back with a 3-0 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter – including an equalizer by Tyler Padua with five seconds left in regulation – tied the game at six-all to force overtime.
Following a scoreless first period of overtime, Yurian Quinones put the Tigers in front, 7-6, with 1:01 on the clock. However, Ethan Shipman cashed in a man-up opportunity with 30 seconds remaining to force sudden death.
At the 1:17 mark of the sudden death period, Zlatan Nikocevic converted an assist from Dylan Patist for the deciding blow as Princeton falls to 8-4 on the season.
McCarroll and Ryan Neapole lead the Tigers’ offense with pairs of goals, while Quinones, Johnston and Pierce Maloney each found the back twine once.
In cage, Antonio Knez made 18 saves in taking the loss.
