LEWISBURG, Pa. — The No. 10-ranked Princeton University women’s water polo team clinched the No. 1 seed for the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship at Brown University on Friday-Sunday, April 25-27, in Providence, R.I., with a 14-8 victory at Bucknell University.
The Tigers tie with Harvard University for the regular season title as both teams conclude the regular season with 10-2 marks. However, Princeton earns the top seed due to goal differential as the Tigers defeated the Crimson 12-8 and suffered a 7-6 setback for a +3 differential in the pair of league meetings between the programs.
After Bucknell started the scoring, Princeton ripped off five consecutive tallies and led 6-2 after eight minutes. Head coach Derek Ellingson‘s group scored the first two goals of the second quarter and led 9-3 at halftime.
The Bison made one more push, recording three straight to get within four, 10-6, with 23 seconds to go in the third frame, but Lindsey Lucas came out of the cage and scored as time expired. Bucknell never threatened again.
Kayla Yelensky led the Tigers with four goals and now has 85 on this season and has 269 in her career, third most in program history. Shanna Davidson, Rachael Carver and Kendall Wyer each had two goals in the win, while Charlotte Riches, Kate Mallery, Ava Houlahan and Lucas chipped in solo markers.
Lucas finished with seven saves to earn the win.
