ORADEA, Romania — Freshman Diego Tresa (Rome, Italy/Istituto Santa Maria) of the Fordham University men’s water polo team did not score as Italy struck down Spain, 11-6, in the quarterfinals of the 2025 U18 European Championship in Oradea, Romania.
Italy – which turned back Greece, 14-9, on Monday, August 18, managed the Netherlands via a 16-11 count on Tuesday, August 19 and experienced a 12-11 setback facing Hungary on Wednesday, August 20, in the final game of Group A to finish second – advances to a semifinal showdown with Montenegro at 7:00 p.m. local time/11:00 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, August 23.
Montenegro earned its spot in the semifinals by dispatching France, 21-11.
In the other semifinal, Greece – which disposed of Croatia, 17-16 – and Serbia – which knocked off Hungary, 14-13 – will meet at 8:30 p.m./12:30 p.m.
Through four games, Tresa has eight goals with man-up (two), penalty (two), center (two), action and counterattack tallies.
The 14-team tournament featuring Greece, Serbia, Spain, Hungary, Montenegro, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Turkey, Germany, Malta, France, Romania, Georgia, Ukraine and Poland runs from August 18-24.
