CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored a hat trick and senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal in overtime as Brown University edged Division III No. 7-ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 11-10, in overtime at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center.

The Bears gained a 9-6 lead entering the fourth quarter and won the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) game with a game-winning goal in overtime after the Engineers sent the game to bonus play tied at 10-10 at the end of regulation.

Carroll added two assists and four field blocks to his three goals, while junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted two goals and two steals. Senior Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) netted two goals.

Bouscaren registered two assists alongside his game winner, and junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) totaled a goal, two assists, and two steals.

Junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) finished with a goal, two assists and three steals, and freshman Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) compiled a goal, two field blocks and two ejections drawn.

In the goal, freshman net-minder Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) blocked 12 shots.

Carroll and Nunez netted the game’s first two goals before a marker from Deirmenjian put Brown up 3-1 with 4:10 to play in the first quarter. A pair of tallies from the Engineers evened the score at 3-3 at the end of one.

Following an MIT marker, Carroll netted back-to-back goals to stake Brown to a 5-4 advantage with 1:56 to go until halftime. A goal from Thygesen gave the visitors a 6-4 advantage at the break.

Brown took the third quarter, 3-2, with goals from Simko, Thygesen, and Nunez providing the Bears with a 9-6 edge heading to the fourth quarter. MIT used a 3-0 run to open the fourth to tie the game at 9-9 with 3:19 left in regulation.

A goal from Rawlings with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter allowed Brown to re-gain a 10-9 advantage before an MIT goal with 16 seconds on the clock sent the game to overtime.

After neither side scored in the first period of overtime, Bouscaren found the back of the net with 42 seconds left in the second bonus session to lift the Bears to the win.
