PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University men’s water polo closed out the regular season with 12-8 win over Iona University on Senior Day for a split on the final day of competition. The Bears dropped a matchup against No. 20-ranked St. Francis College Brooklyn, 10-7, to start the day at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Facing St. Francis Brooklyn, four goals from Ilias Stothart was not enough as Brown fell to the Terriers. Stothart tallied one first quarter goal, one in the third and two in the fourth as Brown was trying make a comeback.
The Bears trailed 3-2 at halftime but St. Francis outscored 6-2 in the third quarter to take over the game.
Filip Aleksic scored on goal for Brown in the first quarter and Evan Moore had a goal in the third quarter. Daniel Hadar scored Brown’s third goal of the fourth quarter.
In the Bears’ NWPC regular season finale, Brown got four goals from senior Matt Simko. Moore and Gabe Chang each added two goals in the win.
The Bears jumped ahead early with goals from Cole Atwell and Simko. A goal by Chang late in the quarter led to the score being tied 3-3 after one.
The first goal in the second quarter came from Simko with 1:35 left on the clock. Ben Kirshon added a goal with 38 seconds left as Brown held Iona scoreless and led 5-3 at the break.
Moore, Simko and Stothart all found the back of the net in the third quarter as Brown held serve with Iona to maintain a two-goal lead going into the final quarter.
Brown increased its lead to four scoring the first two goals of the fourth quarter with Simko and Moore scoring. The Bears stopped any comeback by the Gaels with goals from Chang and Nick Berry late in the quarter.
