THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University seeks a head men’s and women’s water polo coach.

Basic Function:
Reporting to and under the direction of the Director of Athletics, this position is responsible for the management and administration of all aspects of the University’s Water Polo program in adherence to the policies, rules and regulations of the University, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
Representative Duties:
- Develops Water Polo skills, strategies and philosophy.
- Promotes student-athlete academic achievement/success, welfare and provides appropriate mentoring to student-athletes; effectively communicates with student-athletes and assistant coach(es).
- Demonstrates competitive success both in the University, SCIAC and NCAA level and promotes positive sportsmanship.
- Identifies prospective student-athletes who are able to qualify for admission to the University; effectively communicates with prospective student- athletes; effectively communicates and coordinates recruitment efforts with University’s Office of Admissions;
- Maintains student athlete squad numbers at or above University recommended threshold; retains student-athletes in the University; retains the student-athletes on the team at an acceptable retention rate.
- Develops annual budget plan in accordance with Department guidelines; effectively manages the fiscal resources of the program; manage budget expenditures according to the budget plan each year.
- Operates within all University, SCIAC and NCAA Division III guidelines; oversees, manages and recruits for the operation of junior varsity team (if applicable).
- Prepares and provides schedules to facilities scheduler and department for practice and competitions within established guidelines; maintains inventory of equipment, uniforms and supplies and purchases, within program resources, replacements as needed; coordinate all team travel and transportation needs according to established policies and procedures; effectively communicates within the Department and with University community on matters pertaining to program.
- Identifies, hires, trains and evaluates assistant coach(es), including volunteers and graduate assistants; ensures that assistant coach(es)/volunteer(s) adhere to University, SCIAC and NCAA Division III policies, procedures and rules.
- Serves as primary representative for Water polo to both campus and external constituencies; facilitate student-athlete participation in team sponsored service events; hosts summer and/or other off-season camps/clinics; participates in University athletics and Victory Club events; participates in game management responsibilities and professional development opportunities as available.
- Actively work to secure Victory Club membership to generate additional funds as needed for program aspirations and budget augmentation; effectively communicates with all constituencies, including Department staff, other campus departments, alumni, parents and prospective student- athletes.

- Demonstrates competitive success in SCIAC and NCAA/USA Water Polo and promotes positive sportsmanship. Identifies prospective student-athletes who have academic pursuits aligned with Cal Lutheran offerings; effectively communicates with prospective student-athletes; effectively communicates and coordinates recruitment efforts with University’s Office of Admissions;
- Maintains student athlete roster numbers within University recommended threshold; retains student-athletes in the University at current retention rate; retains the student-athletes on the team.

- Compliance issues concerning the administration of intercollegiate athletics.
- Coaching theory, techniques, and strategies; technical and tactical coaching of Water Polo.
- Recruitment techniques and team management of an intercollegiate athletics program.
- Effective promotion of good sportsmanship, academic excellence, and character.
- The care and prevention of athletic injuries, basic sports injury first aid and emergency procedures.
- Principles of sports leadership and training.
- Effective planning and organizational methods.
- Basic liability and risk management issues.
- Pool maintenance and operation.
- Proper pool protocol for safety and aquatic center standard of operations
Ability To:
- Design and implement recruitment plan; scout and recruit quality student-athletes.
- Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and constituent groups outside the University to support the continued success and development of the Water Polo.
- Effectively communicate with student athletes, faculty, staff, and the community.
- Develop an organized program of training to ensure success in intercollegiate Water Polo competition.
- Provide leadership to student athletes to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance.
- Demonstrated experience and expertise in appropriate team building activities.
- Possess the physical skills necessary to demonstrate Water Polo techniques.
- Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes and work within a team-oriented philosophy.
- Maintain knowledge of and ensure compliance with University, NCAA, and SCIAC rules and regulations.
- Effectively teach skills, regulations, and strategies of Water Polo during training sessions and competition.
- Provide a safe environment for students, athletes, visitors, and other constituents.
- Work independently, prioritize, schedule and complete work.
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information; maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.
- Operate a personal computer and associated software, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Slate, etc.
- Operate a vehicle to travel and conduct work; work flexible hours with frequent evenings and weekends.
- Travel locally or nationally.
- Ensure the pool operates at or above standards of health and safety; responsible for movement and maintenance of pool equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelors degree and three years of demonstrated success as a coach of an Intercollegiate Water Polo program.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, or related field.Masters Degree.Experience in Athletics Administration.Commitment to the values, standards and expectations of NCAA Division III athletics and a liberal arts university.A proven ability to recruit quality student-athletes.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
Possession of or ability to obtain CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED (automated external defibrillator) and First Aid certifications within 90 days of employment. Ability to work flexible hours with frequent evenings and weekends is required. Travel is required Valid California drivers license.
