BRIDGEPORT, Pa — Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Official Michael Goldenberg served as a delegate for the 2023 FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China on July 28-August 8. The games were postponed in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2023 games were slated to be in Yekaterinburg, Russia, but were moved back to Chengdu in 2022 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Goldenberg was appointed to the FINA Technical Water Polo Committee as a delegate for the United States in July 2022.
An international official, Goldenberg called the Gold Medal match at the 2019 World Championships and the men’s Gold Medal match at the 2020/2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The recipient of the 2022 Bret Bernard National Referee Award (Elite) from USA Water Polo, he has been officiating collegiate competition since 1993 and has called conference and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships Finals. In 2003, he became an international referee (FINA) and he has since had the opportunity to officiate Gold Medal games on a variety of levels.
The Head Coach/Administrator with South Florida Water Polo Club and the Head Coach of the Boys Team at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, both located in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he was one of two representatives from North America named to the FINA Technical Water Polo Committee joining William Shaw of Canada.
