BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Defending National Champion Stanford University remains the top-ranked team in the nation as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2018 Women’s Varsity Week 2/January 24 National Top 25, Division III Top 10, CWPA Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls.
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Division III), the University of Michigan (CWPA Top 10) and Macalester College (CWPA Division III Top Five) also retain top-billing in their respective rankings
Voted on by a panel of coaches from the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), the Golden Coast Conference, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Big West Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the CWPA based on the cumulative results of the season, the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
2018 Women’s Varsity National Top 25 (Week 2)
Stanford University, which captured the 2017 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship, remains the top-ranked team in the Week 2/January 24 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Varsity National Top 25 Poll.
The Cardinal (99 points) lead a Top 25 which experiences significant shifts following the second weekend of intercollegiate competition.
The biggest change comes at No. 2 as the University of California (93 points) edges round the University of Southern California (92 points) and the University of California-Los Angeles (91 points) to acquire the runner-up spot in the National Poll. Cal’s rise drops USC and UCLA, which ranked at No. 2 and 3 last week, back to No. 3 and 4 with Arizona State University (83 points), the University of Hawaii (78 points), the University of California-Irvine (75 points), the University of Michigan (73 points), University of the Pacific (71 points) and Long Beach State University (63 points) remaining at No. 5-to-10, respectively.
The University of California-Davis (60 points) sticks at No. 11 for another seven-day stretch, while Indiana University (50 points) and Hartwick College (45 points) ascend to No. 12 and 13. Due to the rise of the Hoosiers and Hawks, San Diego State University (44 points) drops into a tie at No. 14 with a resurgent University of California-Santa Barbara (44 points) squad as the Gauchos improve five spots after ranking at No. 19 last week.
San Jose State University (33 points) moves back to No. 16 with the duo of the University of California-San Diego (32 points) and Princeton University (32 points) tying at No. 17.
Harvard University (30 points), Wagner College (31 points), Loyola Marymount University (24 points), Fresno State University (12 points), California State University-Northridge (9 points), Marist College (7 points) and Iona College (5 points) complete this week’s Top 25.

2018 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 2)
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges remains the uncontested top team in Division III as the Sagehens once again rank at No. 1 in the Week 2/January 24 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll.
The Sagehens (100 points), who previously garnered 99 points in the Preseason voting prior to becoming a unanimous top selection last week, are followed by Whittier College (92 points) and California Lutheran University (89 points) as the Top Three programs in the country remain steady.
Change comes to the Top 10 in the middle of the order as Chapman University (80 points) and the University of La Verne (79 points) storm up the ranks to force previously No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (78 points) back to No. 6.
The University of Redlands (69 points) surpasses Occidental College (68 points) to take over at No. 7. Macalester College (37 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (33 points) complete the Top 10.

The Tigers’ rise forces Brown University (74 points) back to No. 6.
Bucknell University (72 points), which was tied with Princeton at No. 7 last week, acquires sole possession of the berth with George Washington University (64 points), Saint Francis University (61 points) and Macalester College (44 points) wrapping up the Top 10.

Macalester (98 points), which joined Grove City College (2010-2012) and Connecticut College (2013-2016) as the sole teams to ever claim the CWPA Division III league crown, widens its lead against the rest of the field to six points as Carthage College (92 points), Connecticut (90 points), five-time (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016) league runner-up Washington & Jefferson College (71 points) and Monmouth College (50 points) complete the Top Five.
