BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Stanford University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges remain at No. 1 in the Division I and III ranks after 10 weeks of varsity competition as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2023 Week 10/March 22 Women’s Varsity National Top 25, Division III Top 10, CWPA Top Five and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls.

Stanford – which claimed the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) title – and Pomona-Pitzer – which garnered the USA Water Polo Division III Collegiate Championship – in 2022 remain favorites to repeat as champions during the 2023 campaign.

Change comes in both CWPA polls as Princeton University acquires sole possession of the No. 1 berth in the Division I Top Five poll, while defending CWPA Division III Champion Austin College takes over at No. 1 in the CWPA Division III Top Five poll

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), the Golden Coast Conference, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Big West Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the CWPA based on the cumulative results of the season, the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season.

2023 Women’s Varsity National Top 25 (Week 10/March 22)

The Cardinal of Stanford University remain the top team in the land by continuing to reign at No. 1 in the 2023 Women’s Varsity National Top 25 Week 10/March 22 Poll.

The Cardinal (100 points) rate as a unanimous top selection to lead a poll which experiences radical shifts outside the Top Six as the University of Southern California (96 points), the University of California (92 points), the University of California-Los Angeles (88 points), the University of Hawaii (84 points) and the University of California-Irvine (80 points) remain steady at No. 2-to-6 behind Stanford.

Princeton University (72 points) – which was ranked at No. 11 last week – climbs into a tie with Fresno State University (72 points) at No. 7 as the Tigers took down prior No. 7 Long Beach State University by an 11-8 score last week.  Long Beach (69 points) slips to No. 9 with the University of California-Santa Barbara (61 points) holding on at No. 10 for another seven-day run.

The University of California-Davis (57 points) backs up to No. 11 with University of the Pacific (56 points) rising to No. 12.  The University of Michigan (54 points), Harvard University (47 points) and Arizona State University (52 points) back-up to No. 13-to-15, respectively, with Loyola Marymount University (39 points) breaking at tie at No. 16 from last week to take sole custody of the position in the March 22 rankings.

Wagner College (36 points) moves up to No. 17, the University of California-San Diego (32 points) falls to No. 18 and the quartet of Indiana University (30 points), San Jose State University (25 points), Brown University (20 points) and California State University-Northridge (15 points) remain at No. 19-to-22.

Long Island University (12 points), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (11 points) and San Diego State University (5 points) exchange the final three positions to complete the March 22 voting.

2023 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 10/March 22)

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges continues at No. 1 in the Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Week 10/March 22 Poll for the 2023 season.

Pomona-Pitzer (100 points) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (95 points) hold at No. 1 and 2 with the University of La Verne (83 points) and California Lutheran University (83 points) tying at No. 3 after rating at No. 3 and 4 last week. The University of Redlands (82 points) falls a point shy of joining La Verne and Cal Lutheran at No. 3.

Austin College (74 points) leaps from No. 9 to No. 6 with Augustana College (66 points), Whittier College (65 points) and Chapman University (57 points) dropping back to No. 7-to-9.

The California Institute of Technology (36 points) cracks the Top 10 by holding down the final spot this week.

2023 Women’s Varsity Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 5 (Week 10/March 22)

Princeton University supplants defending Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion the University of Michigan at No. 1 in the 2023 CWPA Division I Top Five Week 10/March 22 Poll.

The 2000, 2012, 2013 and 2015 league champion Tigers of Princeton (98 points) – which pulled even at No. 1 with the 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 league champion Wolverines of Michigan (97 points) last week – supplant the Maize & Blue as the preeminent team in the league for the next seven days.  It marks the first time Michigan has not held at least a share of the No. 1 berth since the Week 15/April 25 balloting during the 2018 season when Princeton was a unanimous top selection and Michigan also ranked at No. 2.

2022 CWPA Championship runner-up Harvard University (90 points), Brown University (85 points) and Saint Francis University (80 points) hang on at No. 3-to-5 for another week.

2023 Women’s Varsity Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Top 5 (Week 10/March 22)

Austin College takes over as the unanimous top choice in the 2023 Week 10/March 22 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III rankings. 

The 2021 and 2022 CWPA Division III Champion, Austin (100 points) – which defeated previously No. 1 Augustana College (95 points) on the road in Rock Island, Ill., last week, returns to rating at No. 1 in the league for the first time since tying with the Vikings for the top spot in the Week 5/February 15 balloting.  Further, the Kangaroos last held sole possession of the No. 1 spot in the Week 4/February 8 voting.

Macaelster College (90 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (84 points) remain at No. 3 and 4.  Connecticut College (32 points) gains company at No. 5 as Wittenberg University (32 points) ties the Camels.
