CLAREMONT/LOS ANGELES/LA VERNE, Calif. — Connecticut College fell versus Division III No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 14-4, Ottawa University, 20-6, Division III No. 7 Chapman University, 21-6, and Division III No. 4 Whittier College, 23-7, at the 2022 Convergence Tournament hosted by Division III No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Division III No. 6 the University of La Verne and Division III No. 10 Occidental College on Friday-Saturday, March 4-5.

On Friday, March 4, at Pomona-Pitzer’s Haldeman Pool, the Camels jumped on the scoreboard first versus Chapman as Sarah Franco converted a man-up chance with 6:47 left in the first quarter.  However, the Panthers pounded for six goals over the remainder of the first quarter prior to racking up an 8-0 scoring advantage in the second quarter to acquire a 14-1 halftime lead.

The lead proved too much for Connecticut to overcome as Chapman outscored the Camels 3-2 and 4-3 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, on the way to a 21-6 win.

Maria Sell (three), Franco (two) and Claudia Marmelo (one) accounted for Connecticut’s scoring in support of a five save effort by netminder Olivia Fechner-Lewis.

Ceci Buckingham (four), Kaitlyn Pasillas (three), Julia Bridges (three), Charlene Ma (three), Maddy Ta (two), Ally Long (two), Jamie Chin (two), Camille Chiang (one) and Kasey Markell (one) combined for Chapman’s 21 goals.  Georgia Burton earned the win in cage with 13 saves.

Connecticut closed out the first day of competition at the Convergence by taking a 23-7 setback versus Whittier at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ Axelrood Aquatics Center.

The Poets built a 5-0 lead with 3:56 left in the first quarter on the way to a 10-2 margin by the conclusion of the opening frame.  Trailing 14-2 at halftime, the Camels were unable to rally back as Whittier outscored Connecticut 3-2 and 6-3 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Sell and Marissa Moreno led the Camels with hat-tricks to accompany a single score by Zoe Starzenski. Fechner-Lewis took the loss between the pipes.

Teresa Marchetti (two), Amelia Bennett (two), Katelyn Arauz (two), Grace Arnsparger (two), Jenna Marsh (two), Amanda Hernandez (two), Charlotte Umstead (two), Allyson Partikian (two), Ally Burke (two), Bryanna Santis (one), Natasha Velez (one), Karissa Qualley (one), Gabriella Spoonhower (one) and Haley Kivett (one) combined for Whittier’s 23 goals.  Lauren Tapia made one save in earning the win.

At Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, March 5, Connecticut was unable to overpower either Ottawa (Ariz.) or the host Athenas in falling 20-6 and 14-4, respectively.

Against Ottawa, Sell staked the Camels to a 1-0 lead 32 seconds into the first quarter.  However, the Spirit scared up the next 10 goals to acquire a 10-1 lead with 1:33 left in the second quarter.

Leading 11-2 by halftime, Ottawa insulated its lead in the second half by outscoring Connecticut 6-2 and 3-2 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Sell led the Camels with a pair of goals, while Moreno, Dasha Zdvizhkova, Anahi Dominguez, and Maiko Okamura each chipped in solo tallies. 

Kendall Patrick (three), Jenna Rasmussen (three), Tori Higginson (three), Cierra Crouch (three), Diana Leivas (two), Rachel Hughes (two), Kamille Graham (two), Kylee Wessemann (one) and Jasmine Miller (one) accounted for Ottawa’s 20 goals.  Rasmussen, Miller and Kelly Rowan split time in cage during the contest.

In Connecticut’s final game of the invitational, Sell scored twice with Moreno and Marmelo each tacking on single markers against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Leading 4-0 after the first quarter, the Athenas padded their lead with 3-2, 3-1 and 4-1 scoring advantages in the second, third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Jessi Beyer, Mia Adsen, Ka’imi Duncklee, Isabel Dhillon and Cassandra Ruedy each scored twice for CMS with Emily McElroy, Courtney Coleman, Emma Brezoczky and Cooper McKenna tacking on single goals. 

Maribella Munoz-Jimenez made nine saves with four goals allowed in 24 minutes with Jessica Salaz picking up the win by stopping four shots in the first quarter.

Collegiate Water Polo Association
