ERIE, Pa. — April Anderson (Sr., Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) scored five times to notch Player of the Game accolades and 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Rookie of the Year Stephania Lopez (Fr., Chicago, Ill./Saint Ignatius College Prep) pumped in four more as the Connecticut College Camels doubled-up host Penn State Behrend, 10-5, in the opening round of the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division Championship hosted by the Lions at the David M. Hallman Aquatics Center.
The four-time (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) CWPA Division III Champion Camels (7-7, 6-2 CWPA Division III) earn a date with the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College at 7:40 p.m. this evening in the tournament semifinals as both Connecticut and W&J are guaranteed to finish no lower than fourth in the final eight-team tournament standings. The loss drops Penn State Behrend (6-11, 3-5 CWPA Division III) into the consolation side of the bracket as the Lions will square off against Monmouth College at 5:00 p.m. with a berth in the Fifth Place game on the line.
Connecticut never trailed in the game as Anderson pumped in natural (3:21) and man-up (59 seconds) strikes in the first quarter to stake the Camels to a 2-0 lead through eight minutes of competition.
Anderson continued a one-woman onslaught against the Lions by lining in a five-meter penalty shot with 6:25 on the second quarter clock to push the lead to 3-0. Lopez then took over taming Penn State Behrend as she ticked off even-strength (5:54, 5:05) and penalty shot (5:33) scores to increase the spread to 6-0.
Penn State Behrend attempted to rally back as Maryn Horn (Sr., Houston, Texas/Jersey Village) converted back-to-back chances at 4:09 and 3:16 to trim the Camels’ scoreboard advantage down to 6-2, but Shannon Cry (Sr., Monterey, Calif./Monterey) answered at 3:02 to make it 7-2.
The Lions got the goal back, however, prior to the halftime horn as Lauren Wood (Jr., Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) ripped in a five-meter penalty shot at 1:39 to pull Penn State Behrend within 7-3 at the break.
Devon Van Rensburg (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford) continued Penn State Behrend’s comeback try by twirling in a tally at 4:59 of the third quarter to move the Lions within three at 7-4.
However, Connecticut responded as Anderson (2:46, third quarter) and Lopez (4:05, fourth quarter) delivered blows to build the lead back to five at 9-4.
The teams traded scoring punches in the final minute as Horn hammered home a man-up marker for the Lions with 53 seconds left and Anderson beat the buzzer with a shot as time expired for the 10-5 final score.
For Connecticut, Cry netted a single goal to account for the remaining one-tenth of her team’s offense besides the exploits of Anderson and Lopez. In cage, Sarah Nappo (Sr. Portland, Maine/Cheverus) earned the victory with nine saves.
Horn led the way for Penn State Behrend with a hat-trick, while Wood and Van Rensburg both contributed single goals. Holly Rae Hanson (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) suffered the loss with five saves between the pipes.
