BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The CWPA Remote interview series continues as Michigan State University men’s and women’s collegiate club head coach Matt Latham talks with Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Director of Communications Ed Haas about leading the Spartans and building upon MSU’s legacy of success.
Entering his seventh season as head coach of the men’s team and fourth in charge of the women’s program, he guided the Michigan State men to Big Ten Division Championships in 2014 and 2019. The men’s 2014, 2018 and 2019 Big Ten Division Coach of the Year, he helped MSU achieve 10th (2014) and Fifth (2019) Place finishes at the Men’s National Collegiate Club Championships hosted at Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center in Kearns, Utah, and the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa., respectively.
In women’s competition, he earned Big Ten Division Coach of the Year recognition in 2019 as Latham coached the Spartans to the program’s inaugural women’s Big Ten Division crown in 2019. The squad placed 11th at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, as the program made its first appearance at the event since 2008.
The Lansing State Journal Water Polo Coach of the Year in 2012, 2014 and 2015, Latham previously coached water polo at Okemos High School where he lead his girls to a District Championship and Regional Championships in 2012 and 2014.
In addition to his collegiate club coaching position, he serves on the board of the Michigan Water Polo Association and USA Water Polo Midwest Zone.
