BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) alumni Ashleigh Johnson of Princeton University, Bronwen Knox of Hartwick College, Shae Fournier and Jessica Gaudreault of Indiana University along with current University of Michigan standout Maddy Steere (Jr., Pascoe Vale, Australia/St. Catherine’s School) played a part on Day 5 of women’s competition at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, Korea, on Monday, July 22.
Knox and Steere aided Australia in tackling Russia, 9-7, to earn a spot in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday, July 24, against the United States. Team USA and Johnson knocked off Greece, 15-5, to claim its 51st consecutive international win and earn a date with the Aussies.
For Canada, Fournier scored once and goalie Gaudreault held her own as the team survived against China, 17-16, in a sudden death penalty shootout. Tied at 10-all by the conclusion of regulation, the Canadians punched their ticket into the Ninth Place game on July 24 against Kazakhstan by outperforming China 7-6 in penalty shots.
On the deck, longtime CWPA official Michael Goldenberg did not officiate a women’s game on July 22, but did pick up his seventh assignment at the FINA Championships following an 8-6 victory by China over Japan in women’s action on July 14, a 9-9 tie between Japan and Germany in men’s competition on July 15, a 14-12 win by Australia over China on July 16 in women’s competition, a 13-11 win by Hungary against Spain in men’s play on July 17, a 22-2 victory by the Canadian women against Korea on July 18 and a 23-5 men’s win on Friday, July 19, by Hungary against South Africa by calling a 13-11 sudden death penalty shootout win by Australia against Montenegro in men’s competition on Sunday, July 21.
