Division III No. 3 Middlebury College-vs.-Division III No. 6 Hamilton College Scoresheet (2022 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship – Game #8/Third Place)

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Sarah Mines (So., Austin, Texas) scored a game-high seven goals as host/Division III No. 3-ranked Middlebury College of the North Atlantic Division took down Division III No. 6 Hamilton College of the Mid-Atlantic Division, 12-8, in the 2022 Women’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship Third Place game.

The inaugural/2019 Women’s Division III Collegiate Club Champion, the Panthers add another plaque to the institution’s list of athletics achievements as Middlebury fell behind 1-0, but rallied back to acquire a 5-1 advantage on the scoreboard by the conclusion of the first quarter.  The team pushed its margin to 9-3 by halftime and did enough to keep the Continentals in check over the 14 minutes of the second half to down Hamilton in the final contest of the five-team, eight-game championship weekend.

For Middlebury, Mines (six) and Teddy Parkinson (Fr., Hood River, Ore.) (two) combined for eight of the Panthers’ 12 goals, while Maya Gee (Sr., Waikoloa, Hawaii), Estelle Martin (Jr., Palo Alto, Calif.) and Jac Blinoff (Sr., London, England) each found the back twine once.

In cage, Adelaide Mahler (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) made 10 saves to earn the win.

Across the tank, Claire Goldstein (Sr., Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff Manor) and SJ Bennett (Sr., Stamford, Conn./Westhill) notched three and two markers, respectively.  The trio of Hannah Budner (Jr., Plainfield, N.H./Lebanon), Maddie Sakheim (Sr., Hamden, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Katrina Colby (Sr., Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) each deposited single shots to account for the remainder of Hamilton’s scoring.

Keeley Duran (Sr., Barkhamsted, Conn./The Ethel Walker School) stopped five shots in taking the loss in the Continentals’ cage.

Hamilton struck first in the contest as Goldstein slipped in a shot 49 seconds into the contest to provide the Continentals their lone lead of the contest.  Mines (4:37, 3:17, 2:37) erased Middlebury’s deficit with three consecutive strikes to push the Panthers ahead to stay at 3-1.  Martin (2:05) and Mines (1:38) capped off the first quarter with back-to-back scores as Middlebury exited the opening seven minutes with a 5-1 advantage on the scoreboard.

The lead continued to grow in the opening moments of the second quarter as Gee (6:18, man-up), Parkinson (5:55, man-up), Blinoff (4:45) and Mines (4:08) put away shots to enlarge the margin to 9-1.  Colby snapped the Panthers’ scoring run at nine goals by putting in a shot at 3:55 before Bennett lined in a five-meter penalty shot with 54 seconds left in the frame for a 9-3 contest at halftime.

Mines put away natural (4:59) and man-up (4:18) markers to begin the second half, but Sakheim (4:04) and Goldstein (51 seconds, man-up) answered over the remainder of the third quarter to set the scoreboard at 11-5 heading into the final seven minutes of regulation.

Budner (4:45) trimmed Middlebury’s lead to 11-6 close to the midway point of the fourth quarter, but Parkinson (3:34) delivered a counter-point as the Panthers’ led 12-6 with three and a half minutes left in the contest.

Bennett (3:19) and Goldstein (27 seconds, penalty shot) closed out the scoring to shrink the final margin down to four at 12-8.
