SHERMAN, Texas — The Division III No. 6-ranked Macalester College women’s water polo team completed play at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III-West Regional with an 11-8 loss to host/Division III No. 10 Austin College and a 17-8 victory over Penn State-Behrend. The results leave the Scots with a 6-3 record overall and a 3-1 CWPA mark on the weekend.
Against Austin, Macalester trailed 3-2 after one quarter despite goals from junior Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and senior Sian Lewandowski (North Haven, Conn./Williston Northampton).
Senior Kendall Coney (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) tied the score with the first goal of the second quarter. Over the final six minutes of the quarter, the Kangaroos tallied six unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-3 lead at the half.
A pair of goals by junior Kendall Strauss (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) helped the Scots pull to within five, 10-5, after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Macalester made a late run with two goals by senior Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and another from Anna Gaisser (Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) to make the score 11-8. However, Austin held on the rest of the way to escape with the win.
In the win over Penn State-Behrend, Macalester built a 7-1 advantage after two quarters and extended the lead to 13-2 en route to a 17-8 victory.
10 different Scots scored in the win, led by Palmer-Sammons’ four goals. Junior Alana Nadolski (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and Gaisser each tallied three goals.
Junior goalkeeper Jayden Kratt (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) played the first half and made four saves, with first year Myles Kratz (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) playing the second half in goal.
