ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Augustana College women’s water polo team picked up two more wins to finish 4-0 at the Macalester College Invitational as the Vikings defeated the California Institute of Technology, 22-12, and Carthage College, 19-7, at Riley Pool.

Facing Caltech, the Vikings got off to a fast start in the opening quarter by shutting out the Beavers while scoring seven times in the first eight minutes. Casey Barragan found the back of the net four times in the opening frame, joined by teammates Ocean Akau, Annie Opal Dickson and Olivia Parry.

The Beavers won the second quarter 5-3 to inch closer at halftime, with the Vikings receiving three goals from three different players to bring the score to 10-5 entering intermission. Barragan, Akau, and Dickson notched a goal for the second straight quarter.

Augustana pulled away for good in the third quarter, doubling up Caltech, 6-3, to hold a 16-8 margin heading into the fourth quarter.

Three new Vikings scored in the frame led by a pair from Charlotte Newport and a trio by Barragan. Jillian Hagmann and Lauren Dickinson also found the back of the net for the first time in the contest.

Barragan’s three scores in the final frame gave her eight for the game, the most in her short Augie career.

As a team, the Vikings tallied 20 assists on their 22 goals. Five different Augie members notched at least three, with Victoria Guest boasting a team-high five. Lanie DaSilva had eight saves in net.

Taking on fellow Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III institution Carthage in a non-conference contest, the Vikings again acquired an early lead by scoring four times and holding the Firebirds to just one point in the first eight minutes.

Four different Vikings notched a goal in the first quarter as Akau, Guest, Barragan, and Carli Udovich helped put their team in front early.

Augustana cushioned its margin via a 6-2 second quarter to claim a 10-3 lead by halftime. Barragan added two more to her total in the frame, with Jersey Merrick and Dickinson also joining in on the scoring. Barragan went on to score at least once in every quarter, tallying six in the win.

Guest also added six goals, two of which came via penalty shot.

In net, Lizzie Pelzman stopped 15 shots and snagged four steals.
