MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Goalie Santiago Brusseau (Fr., New York, N.Y.) made nine saves to collect Player of the Game honors as Division III No. 8-ranked Carnegie Mellon University of the Mid-Atlantic Division picked up a 17-10 victory over Division III No. 3 Grinnell College of the Heartland Division in the Seventh Place game of the 2018 Men’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Wesleyan University.
The finish is CMU’s third Seventh Place mark in the history of the Division III Club Championship following earlier Second (2016), Fourth (2017), Sixth (2005, 2013, 2014, 2015), Seventh (2008, 2010), Eighth (2011) and Ninth (2012) placements.
Trailing 1-0 and 2-1 in the first quarter, the Tartans turned the tables on Grinnell at the end of the opening frame when Greta Markey (Fr., Western Springs, Ill.) lined in a shot with two seconds left to balance the scoreboard at two-all.
The goal started a 4-0 run by Carnegie Mellon as Rohan Dhesikan (Fr., San Jose, Calif.), Vivaan Bahl (Gr., Palo Alto, Calif.) and Tori Chen (So., San Jose, Calif.) ticked off back-to-back-to-back strikes at 5:50, 5:20 and 4:20, respectively, to open the second quarter and put the Tartans in front to stay at 5-2.
Alexander Lavery snapped the streak with a tally at 2:46 to move Grinnell back within two at 5-3, but consecutive goals from Kelby Kramer (Fr., Half Moon Bay, Calif.) at 2:36 and 2:06 followed by a blast from Aneek Mukherjee (Jr., Edison, N.J.) at 1:12 engorged the margin to five at 8-3. The Wild Turkeys were able to cut into their deficit prior to the halftime horn by outscoring Carnegie Mellon 2-1 over the remaining 72 seconds of the first half to set the scoreboard at 9-5 entering the break.
Carnegie Mellon pulled away further in the third quarter thanks to a 3-1 scoring spurt to widen the gap to 12-6 prior to putting away five shots to Grinnell’s four in the fourth quarter for the 17-10 final score.
For CMU, Kramer (four), Baahl (three), Chen (two) and Joey Santillo (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) (two) all notched multi-goal games, while Mukherjee, Jacobian Gobbo (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.), Jared Hayes (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), Dhesikan and Markey chipped in single tallies.
Lavery led the way for Grinnell with six goals to accompany pairs by Olivia Konieczny and Peter Cipriano. Goalie Johnathan Flukinger took the loss with one save.
The Wild Turkeys’ Eighth Place finish marks the program’s lowest at the Division III Club Championship as the squad previously wrapped-up the event with Second (2007), Third (2001, 2015), Fourth (2003, 2011), Fifth (2004, 2009), Sixth (2002, 2008, 2016) and Seventh (2013, 2014) spots.
