ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The United States Naval Academy went into the program’s video archives and pulled out a 14-9 victory over the University of California-Irvine on September 17, 2006, on the final day of the NorCal Tournament hosted by Stanford University.
The win was Navy’s first ever against UC-Irvine since the program was reinstated in the early 1980s.
“We had a great effort in the first game today. The score wasn’t as close as 14-9 sounded,” said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. “This was a huge win for us confidence wise, and its a good accomplishment for us to beat them for the first time ever. They are a little down this year, but they are still one of the top teams in the country.”
Navy controlled most of the game, jumping out early and scoring often. Aaron Recko led the Mids with five goals, while Tyler Hill added three goals. Bram Arnold and Michael Mulvey tallied two goals, while Andrew Plumb and Eric Gardiner scored once.
George Naughton saw the majority of time in goal, making 10 saves, while allowing six goals. Steve Craney allowed three goals and made two saves.
Navy went three-for-six on extra-man chances, while UC-Irvine was four-of-11.
