Macalester College-Utica College Scoresheet (PDF)

ERIE, Pa. — Oriana Galasso (So., Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic) scored in the first, second and third quarters to earn Player of the Game honors and join teammates Lucille Moran (Jr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Cara Mullery (So., Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) in posting hat-tricks as Division III No. 7-ranked Macalester College stopped Utica College, 15-3, in the opening game of the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division Championship hosted by Penn State Behrend at the David M. Hallman Aquatics Center.

The victory advances the defending CWPA Division III Champion Scots (12-4, 8-0 CWPA Division III) into the tournament semifinals as Macalester will return to the pool at 6:20 p.m. to take on the victor of a first round clash between Carthage College and Grove City College.  Utica (0-12, 0-8 CWPA Division III) slips into the consolation side of the bracket as the Pioneers will face the fallen from Carthage-Grove City game at 3:40 p.m. with a spot in the tournament’s Fifth Place game on the line.

Macalester never trailed in the game as the Scots ran out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter courtesy tallies from Moran (6:55, 5:38), Mullery (5:56, 4:19) and Galasso (4:46).  Utica got on the board with 2:23 remaining in the opening quarter as Hnyla Sloan (Jr., Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) finished a chance, but Brooke Finney (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) returned the lead to five prior to the final buzzer by denting the twine with 34 seconds left for a 6-1 scoreboard advantage after eight minutes of action.

The Scots padded the margin to 10-1 prior to halftime as Natalie Hoffman (Jr., Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) swished an even-strength marker (7:26) prior to Finney (4:50), Moran (3:55) and Galasso (3:29) depositing man-up strikes to cap off a 4-0 second quarter scoring spurt.

Krystiana Rehrig (Sr., Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) snapped Macalester’s scoring run by lining a shot into the cage with 19 seconds one in the third quarter to move the Pioneers within eight at 10-2.  However, Zoe Schopick (Fr., Winchester, Va./James Wood), Mullery, Hannah Gray (Sr., Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) and Galasso answered for the Scots with back-to-back-to-back-to-back blasts at the 6:45, 5:43, 3:29 and 1:02 marks, respectively, to inflate the spread to 14-2 with a quarter left in regulation.

Neither team punched in another score until the final 76 seconds of the contest as Emily Czerwonka (So., Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) and Gray exchanged tallies with 1:16 and 1:03 on the clock, respectively, to establish the 15-3 final score.

For Macalester, Finney and Gray both joined Moran, Galasso and Mullery in posting multi-goal games as the duo dropped in pairs. Schopick and Hoffman each found the back of the cage once in support of a seven-save effort from netminder Courtney Overland (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani).

On the other end of the tank, Sloan, Rehrig and Czerwonka racked up single scores with goalies Michalyn Winkler (Jr., Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Courtney Kennedy (So, Long Island, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) combining for six saves.
