WASHINGTON – Four in-season tournaments and three Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) home games highlight the 2017 George Washington men’s water polo schedule.
The Colonials, who finished last season tied for 15th nationally in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) poll, are set for nine games against programs that closed 2016 ranked.
“This is a challenging schedule from start to finish, which is exactly what we need to be able to reach our goals,” first-year head coach Barry King said. “Coming into this program, I think we’ve got a great opportunity in front of us to build on last season’s success as we strive for a MAWPC championship. I’m excited to get started.”
GW begins King’s tenure at the Navy Open on September 2-3 on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy. The team opens against Navy before also facing Navy’s B squad, Washington & Jefferson College and Salem International University.
The following week brings a trip to the Princeton Invitational where the Colonials will meet the University of California-Los Angeles, Iona College, Harvard University and Brown University at Princeton University. They’ll use four games at the Bucknell Invitational on September 15-17 in Lewisburg, Pa., as a final tune-up for MAWPC play.
GW kicks off conference competition on September 23 facing Bucknell at Navy. It finishes the weekend with its home debut, a matchup against Fordham University on September 24. Road trips to Johns Hopkins University (September 29-30) and Bucknell (October 7) follow.
Then, the Colonials head to Massachusetts for a series of strong tests. They play at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on October 12 before spending the next three days at the Harvard Invitational. That tournament will feature three games against teams that finished last season ranked in Brown, Princeton and the host Crimson.
GW is at Charles E. Smith Center Pool for Alumni Weekend, hosting Johns Hopkins on October 20 at 7:00 p.m. and Navy on October 21 at 10:00 a.m. The regular season wraps up November 4 in New York with games against Wagner College and Fordham.
The 2017 MAWPC Championship will be held from November 17-19 at Navy’s Scott Natatorium in Annapolis, Md.
