WASHINGTON, D.C. — The George Washington University water polo team picked up wins against Wagner College, 12-10, and Mount St. Mary’s University, 13-11, as it celebrated Senior Day in style with back-to-back Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) victories at the Smith Center. The Buff and Blue improve to 11-12 overall and 5-6 in the MAWPC.

The Revolutionaries looked to bounce back after being defeated by Wagner last weekend, and they did just that, defeating the Seahawks, 12-10.

Nothing separated the teams in a low-scoring first half as the teams went into the halftime break knotted at four-all. GW took a 5-4 lead to start the third quarter, and though the Seahawks were able to tie the game at the start of the fourth quarter, GW never trailed in the second half. Tied at 10-all, GW retook the lead halfway through the final frame, and added an insurance goal with one minute remaining on its way to the 12-10 victory.

Leo Lueddemann and Viktor Jovanovic paced the Revolutionaries with four goals apiece. Andrija Sekulic also made his presence felt with two goals, three assists, one steal and a team-high four ejections drawn.

The Buff and Blue rode its momentum from the afternoon match and a special Special Day ceremony to take down Mount St. Mary’s, 13-11.

The Revolutionaries and Mountaineers were tied up at four-all in the second quarter before a three-goal run from GW created some distance, and GW eventually held a 9-6 lead after 16 minutes. A 4-2 advantage in the third quarter gave the Revolutionaries a five-goal cushion entering the fourth quarter, which they rode to a 13-11 victory.

Sekulic was a force against Mount St. Mary’s, netting seven goals and adding two assists and three steals. Jovanovic also had an impactful outing, with four goals and five ejections drawn.
