No. 20 Brown University-vs.-Mercyhurst University Scoresheet (2025 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship – Game #4)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — No. 20-ranked/host Brown University defended its home water at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center as the Bears built a 10-3 lead by halftime and outscored Mercyhurst University by a 7-0 count in the second half in rolling to a 17-3 victory on the second day of the 2025 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship.

The Bears (17-14, 7-5 CWPA) guarantee themselves a Top Six finish at the CWPA Championship as Brown, Mercyhurst and Saint Francis University are competing in a three-game round-robin to determine Fifth-to-Seventh Place in the final seven-team championship standings.

Brown – which previously claimed first (2001), second (2003), third (2024), fourth (2004, 2009, 2012, 2022), fifth (2000, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, 2023), sixth (2002, 2010, 2018), seventh (2005, 2016, 2017) and ninth (2011) place at the CWPA Championship – will next be in action at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 27, against SFU, while Mercyhurst will conclude its 2025 campaign at 5:00 p.m. later today versus the Red Flash.

Facing Mercyhurst (5-23, 0-12 CWPA) for the third time in 2025 following 19-6 (March 1, at Harvard University) and 11-1 (March 29 at Princeton University) wins in neutral site league games, Brown added a home defeat of the Lakers to its season record thanks to dominant play in all four quarters.

The Bears never trailed in the contest as Aubrie Anderson (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) (7:14; 4:57, penalty shot) and Alexandra Love (Jr., Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) (4:04) put Brown ahead 3-0 less than four minutes into the game.  Marley Hanlon (So., Orlando, Fla./Lake Mary) put the Lakers on the scoreboard at 3:37 before Gaby Montalvo (So., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) deposited back-to-back tallies for Brown with 2:47 and six seconds left in the first eight minutes to make it a 5-1 game.

Anderson completed a hat-trick at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter by lining in a five-meter penalty shot to build the margin to 6-1.  Grace Brzyski (Sr., Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) (6:23, penalty shot) and Allie Dombkowski (Gr., Erie, Pa./McDowell) (2:38) responded for Mercyhurst to bookend a strike by Sabrina Shipley (Jr., Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) (3:19) to flip the scoreboard to 8-3 in favor of the Bears.

From there, the game was all Brown as Shipley (40 seconds) and Hanna Tidrenczel (So., Budapest, Hungary/Korosi Csoma Sandor Bilingual Baptist) (three seconds, man-up) closed out the second quarter to make it 10-3.

Claire Poissonnier (Sr., Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) (7:08, man-up), Ava Schoening (Fr., Seattle, Wash./Corona Del Mar) (4:40) and Tidrenczel (46 seconds) pumped in strikes during the third quarter prior to Katharine Knowles (Sr., Fullerton, Calif./Troy) (6:04, penalty shot), Shipley (4:15), Love (2:15) and Skye Andros (Fr., Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) (1:29, penalty shot) putting away scores in the fourth quarter to close out the contest.

For Mercyhurst – which rejoined the CWPA prior to the 2025 campaign and holds prior eighth (2008-eight teams), ninth (2015-10 teams), 10th (2011-11 teams; 2012-12 teams) and 12th (2013-12 teams) place finishes at the Eastern/CWPA Championship – Hanlon, Brzyski and Dombkowski each chipped in solo markers to support a combined eight save effort by goalkeepers Marley Ramon (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque) (five saves, 10 goals allowed) and Panna Mozbauer (Jr., Gyor, Hungary/Peterfy Sandor Lutheran) (three saves, seven goals allowed).

Anderson, Love and Shipley each posted hat-tricks to share Player of the Game kudos for Brown, while Tidrenczel and Montalvo accounted for pairs of scoring successful chances.  Knowles, Schoening, Poissonnier and Andros each tacked on single goals in support of a one save effort by netminder Roxanne Hazuka (Jr., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla).
