2016-17 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honorees (PDF)
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Big Ten Conference announced the selection of Indiana University’s Mollie Williams (Fr., Sutherland Shire, Australia/Meriden) as a 2016-17 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient.
She is one of two water polo players recognized on the list with the University of Michigan’s Danielle Johnson (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas).
One member of each varsity sports team on every Big Ten campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
A 2017 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Honorable Mention and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-Conference Second Team selection, Williams joined the Hoosiers at the semester break and led a potent freshman class with 42 goals and six hat tricks, adding 27 assists and 46 steals to the season effort. She led Indiana with 26 drawn exclusions and notched eight field blocks.
As the regular season reached its final stretch, Williams slipped into a goal-scoring groove. She finished 16 of her goals in the Hoosiers’ last two regular season weekends, marking season highs of four goals against both Princeton University (April 8) and George Washington University (April 9). Williams recorded at least one goal or one assist in 27-of-31 games this year, leading all Hoosiers in the feat.
